Mild depression

Potential benefits

Antidepressant, nerve healing, antiviral

Origin

Europe

Cautions and who should avoid it

St. John's Wort has significant interactions with many medications, including antidepressants (SSRIs), birth control, blood thinners, and other prescriptions — it can make these medications less effective or, when combined with SSRIs specifically, raise the risk of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Do not use if taking any prescription medication without first consulting a doctor or pharmacist. May also increase sun sensitivity. Lavender and lemon balm may increase drowsiness with sedatives; discontinue if allergic.
